Electric Indigo (AT) - Waiting

from by female:pressure

"Waiting" is a snap-shot of a possibly (but hopefully not) endless process of deconstruction and disintegration. This track is a live take and theoretically could sound different and last much longer.

I used recordings of breaking glasses - courtesy of my friend Pia Palme who made them during the development of our opera ABSTRIAL in March 2013. I processed them in various, concurrent ways by means of granular synthesis and spectral interpolation. My favorite tools to do so are Robert Henke's MaxForLive devices Granulator and GrainFreeze and Michael Norris' Spectral DroneMaker Audio Unit plug-in.

In a first version of the track, the sound of the granulated glasses was too stereo due to very different grain sizes for each audio channel - very next to your left ear and next to your right ear only, almost nothing happened in front of you. I changed this extreme panning with the Ableton Live EQ Eight in M/S mode, boosting certain frequencies in the panoramic center and extenuating especially low frequencies on the sides.

All percussive sounds but the bass drum are made of granulated voices - these female voices are very present but hardly recognizable as such. Sometimes, though, words emerge for a moment. Voices seem to be counting... but they cannot proceed, they don't make headway. "Time stretch" takes on a different meaning while the glasses keep cracking.
